Beautiful local walks

Walk along part of the Solway Firth on the beach and around a couple of rocky headlands, then along lanes to reach the museum devoted to local man John Paul Jones (01747 – 1792), ‘Father of the American Navy’ – and traitor to his own country.  Further along comes Arbigland House Gardens, where you can choose to return along lanes and minor roads or via the beach again.

Or perhaps head inland and climb Criffel, our local ‘mountain’ at 570 metres high, the eighth most prominent hill in Scotland!  There views across the Solway are spectacular.  Then down into New Abbey for a well earned cup of tea or a beer!

Drive along the coast to Kippford, watch the sailing boats and then follow the coastal path to Rockcliffe and enjoy the view across to Rough Island which is a bird sanctuary of 8 hectares which can be reached at low tide at certain times of the year.
